A Little Bakin'

Gentle Friends, again not much out there to report on from the world of thrifting and consignment....  so I'll mention something sweet and tasty I made up Sunday afternoon... I got a hankering for some scones and to the interent  I headed... at the Food.com site I found an easy peasy recipe that looked and sounded good..... Mini Vanilla Scones (Like Starbucks) and I do enjoy those treats, so I thought why not give it a try....

...  it came together quite quickly and from thing's I already had in the cupboard.  The only changes I made to the recipe were to use the whole stick of butter in the batter and sprinkle the top with a bit of sugar before baking.  It turned out terrific!!  The scones had a very tender crumb, and really, so much more tasty than those from Starbucks, I guess warm from the oven never hurt a baked good!!  Give it a try, you won't regret it at all!!

A Little Framing

Gentle Freinds, a while back I took a few things in for framing and have gotten one of them back....

... I finished this piece up about a year ago and thought it would be nice framed and hanging up.  The sampler is made up from the "Monthly Animals" by NickysCreations.   Stitched on 36ct "Sandpiper" and stitched in my conversion from the charted DMC to WDW.  The photo makes the frame a bit more shiny than it really is, I chose it because it is an old gold colour and not too bright.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, a little snap of the most current stitching on "Sojourner".....

... I had to convert the silks for the tree from the called for silks which were far to close in colour to give much distinction of the three parts.  So I ended up stitching the different sections a couple of times each until I came up with a combination that I liked.  I also converted the silks for the deer from the called for silk to a colour combination I like much better.

A Little Love From a Baby Sister

Gentle Friends, one of the great pleasures of my life is my baby sister.  Every now and then a box of fun things arrives...one recently came that held some treats from a couple of recent trips she took...

... from Alaska came a jar of  Raspberry nectar, from British Columbia came the three grades of maple syrup and Maple Butter (I do love me some mapley things!!) and as always she knows our fondness for Portlands own Stumptown coffee, "Hair Bender" roast, the darkest and best there is!!!
________________

My sweet sister also keeps our house well fixed with the best ever, IMHO,
Snoqualmie pancake and waffle mix...

...last night I made a stack of waffles and fried some bacon for dinner, and tried the maple treats, delicious!!  Rico only likes Mrs. Butterworths, go figure.....

A Little Thrifting....

Gentle Friends, it's been two weeks of really no fun finds at all, both past Saturdays were total busts...so last Saturday after looking around an "Estate Sale" it was more of a yard sale, we headed to...

Zapata Mexican Grill - Castro - San Francisco, CA - Yelp
... Zapata Mexican Grill a taqueria in the Castro that has some really tasty offerings and won't break the bank.  We ordered and took it home...

... I got a grilled prawn super burrito ( "super burrito" only means the addition of guacamole and sour cream to the beans, rice and prawns) usually I eat half and save half for later, but this time I just gobbled the whole thing up!!

So, nothing fun to report but we had a nice lunch!!
Here's hoping there's better things out there this weekend!!

Gentle Friends, I got some stitching on Sojourner done over the weekend... here's a snap...

... I finished up the grassy area and although it is not as charted I am thinking I like it this way better and will live with it while I stitch on the rest of the stuff in this area.....

A Couple of Cuties

Gentle Friends, I thought I'd wrap up the week with a who hound snap....

... I was doing some laundry the other evening and before I could fold the clean dry sheets two hounds wriggled their way into the warmness...with the temps hovering in the low 60's all week they are on the lookout for warm places!!

A Little Dinner Out

Gentle Friends, last night we headed for South City to check on some framing I'm having done and while we were down there we stopped off for a little dinner.....

...there are only 2 In-N-Out Burger places near to SF  - one down at Pier 39 and this one in South City.....  and since we were down this way dinner was a no brainer!!

...  we both got Double-Double's and fries...

... and we picked up a plain hamburger for the Who Hounds like we normally do.  There would be no way we could walk back in the house without a snicky snack for the hounds, when they could easily smell that we had stopped off for dinner at a burger place...the looks we would have gotten!!!  Since In-N-Out shares a parking lot with Krispy Kreme, how could we not walk over for a couple of delicious donuts.....

... there are far too many to choose from, so I stick with the chocolate glazed kreme filled ones....

... back in the production area they were making what looked like glazed chocolate cake donuts... it was a fun dinner out and a nice change of pace!!

The weekend was a really lovely, quite foggy and breezy for most of Saturday, so the temps hovered in the upper 50's and low 60's so we had a little heat on... then Sunday the temps crawled into the upper 60's and we turned off the heater and had the door open onto the balcony...,

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, the thrift/consignment shops were kind of a bust this week,
but we hit two nice Estate sales...

... one of the Estate sales was really good for DVD's... and although there were many of them I already had there were quite a few that I didn;t.... The International collection of Charlie Chan films with Werner Olan - where Charlie goes to London , Paris, Egypt and Shanghai, Sargent York, Julia, Stella Dallas, the Frankenstein Legacy 5 Film Collection, the Granda Television Production of Hemnry VIII and Bride of Frankenstein and Edward the King about Edward VII.  At another estate sale where some super books and I only bought two history books  (I have far too many books at this point to buy very many more!!) and I found a Heisey Greek key patterned Powder box - some great finds for a "Bust" weekend!!

A Little Jammin'

Gentle Friends, a while back I got a wild hair to make some jam and since there is some beautiful stone fruit coming into the City from the valley I knew that the long weekend was a perfect time to get it in gear and make some!!!!  I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to make - it was a toss up between apricot and plum.... well... being the procrastinator I tend to be I waited to late for apricots and the plums were in full "fig" so plum it was.... I found a super recipe over at Natasha's Kitchen - click HERE to go there -  I had been looking for recipe that used NO extra pectin and she had one that works, and is super tasty!!!

I actually used two kinds of plums, a smaller prune plum from a friends tree and some black plums from the farmers market -

I had to haul out my two biggest mixing bowls to macerate the fruit with sugar in... I actually ended up with around 13lbs of fruit.... so I upped the sugar 3/4 of a cup... after about an hour and 1/2 the fruit had released a ton of liquid.... so into the pot.....

...  I bought this great 10 quart restaurant pot from a consignment store a couple of weeks ago, something I had to have - not knowing then that shortly I would be putting it to use...

...  this is a snap of the first "come to boil" and "simmer 10 minutes"...

.... the first "coming back down to room temp"  and since the temps have been in the upper 50's here , I actually sat the whole pot on the "veranda" and let the foggy breezes bring the temps down even faster, to get a second boil in quicker.....

... a snap of the second boil/simmer, see how much of the liquid has evaporated....  it did spatter a bit during each boil/simmer and I had a damp sponge at the ready to wipe up all the spots.... I seemed to have missed one in this snap...

... and this is either the second or third cool down.....

... coming into the home stretch, this is going into the final boil/simmer and even at this point it is already thick and delicious!!!!

... and here's a snap of the final jarred jam, I got 15 and 3/4, 1/2 Pints out of this recipe....
some to keep and some to give away!!!!  I loved making this stuff and stretched it out over three days, so there was no rush or stress.
