A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends... out and about again over the weekend - cast your mind back a few years and you may remember when I found this fun cookie jar...

... I have a few cookie jars and switch them out seasonally, but this one sits out quite a bit when I need just a fun jar out the counter...well...this past weekend here are the things I picked up ...

... from L to R ... a great old 19th platter in a modified Imari pattern, a fun piece of Beswick of kitties, a "new" coffee cup for work, a vintage chrome and amber glass tidbits dish...and
...another cookie jar...

... the same maker (unknown) with some super chickens... and I like chickens more than ducks so I'll probably just move the duck one through the Bay of evil and keep the chicken one for myself!!

A Little Thrifting and a "Sweet" Treat

Gentle friends, here's a snap of the few things I picked up when we were out and about over the weekend...

... I really enjoy Alison Weir's writing and have never read this one - and you know what a fan of the Tudor's I am so it was a win-win for me!!  I picked up the pilsner glass in a pattern called "Cavalcade" by Libby Glass.... I like this pattern and have quite a few pieces of it... I found a couple of DVD's to add to the collection.

...the CEO of the company Rico works for went on a fishing trip to Canada and one of the bits of schwag he brought back was this super bottle of maple syrup...  what a treat!!

A Little Breakfast

Gentle Freinds, after Mass we headed south of Market to a little neighborhood place called Rocco's...

... it's a place we've heard about from quite a few people but just started trying out recently...

...like most places here in the City they have quite a few brunchy type specials....

.... it's a great neighborhood place and with so many things to look at on the walls...

 _______________

I usually remember to take a snap when the plates hit the table but forgot this time and about half way through took my snaps....

... I had a short stack, eggs over easy and a side of Italian sausage...

... Rico had poached eggs (hard) on English muffin, grilled tomato, avocado and as always....

.... he ordered a side of french fries!!  These were especially good since they sprinkle some kind of seasoning on them and that makes them really good!!

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle friends, I've finished up block eight on AotH .... here's a snperoo..

... I stitched my paternal great grandparent's initials and marriage year into this square - and now that I look at it I think I will go back and stitch the date also -  this was his second marriage.  He was named after his father (my Great-great grandfather) and my dad was named after him and I was named after my father so I am the fourth to carry the name - not too confusing.

Here's a snap of the entire piece as it stands at the moment..... sorry about the wrinkles....

I made quite a few floss changes.  This piece as with most BBD calls for overdyed flosses - I felt that the skeins called for that I had were really much to light or I just didn't like them...whatever...so I converted them to darker shades or colors I like better.

Here is the list with the suggested floss first and my change if any:
CC Avocado no change
CC Gingersnap to GAST Butternut Squash
CC Little Brown House no change
CC Olive Branch no change
CC Onion Skin to GAST Hazelnut
CC Peanut Brittle to CC Pumpkin Harvest
CC Stepping Stones no change
CC Sunkissed to GAST Brandy
CC Tiny Vine to GAST Endive
GAST Lexington Green no change

I think after I finish up the next block I'll go back nd fill in all the dates, initials and other familial information.

Once again it was a lovely cool and breezy weekend here by the Bay.  All around us, to the North, South and East Bay the temps were hovering in the low 90's and into the100's, while we were in the low 70's on Saturday and then the temps moved back into the cool upper 60's on Sunday..... thank goodness for the Pacific Marine breeze and fog!!!

A Little Fun at Land's End

Gentle friends, our 4th of July started off with a little breakfast at Louis' down at the beach overlooking Land's end, The Cliff House and points west..... we went with some friends that have lived here in the City for years, but have never been..... here are some snaperoo's...

... Louis' sits alone overlooking the Pacific... and with all the fog and wind it was a really typical Summer morning here by the Bay

... we got one of the booths so that we could look down on the ruins of the Sutro Baths...

... here are what Mike and Rico ordered....

.... and I got a waffle with some berries and John got french toast....  it was a really tasty breakfast and the views as usual spectacular!!

After breakfast, we walked down to the beach....

... some of the ruins up close... the tide was coming in ...

... some of the rocks down by the shore...

... we walked back up the hill towards the Lands End building and I got this nice shot of the entrance to The Golden Gate and through the trees, you can just see the Marin Headlands...

A Little More Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, the weekend was long, cool, windy and wonderfully foggy!! and I loved every minute of it!!  Most of the time the temps hovered in the low 60's - so it was perfect for this old buzzard to stay in sweatshirts for four days!!

I've been stitching a bit on AotH and here's where I left off last night...

... I've switched out most of the called for flosses for what I think are better choices - but I've tried to stay within the colour groups as the piece was charted....

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, two stitching posts in one week.... what is the world coming to.  I finished up "Swan Lake" and thought I'd wrap the week up on a couple of snaps of where I'm at before the long weekend.....

Here's a snap of the "Swan Lake" Block...

.... I've dedicated it to my Brother and SIL, they were married in July so I thought that would be appropriate... I added a heart - as I will throughout the piece - the only other small changes I made were to shift around the vines at the top to fit the "M" in, I also cross-stitched the "M" and didn't long stitch it - I didn't like the way the long stitch looked.  The only floss change I made was to use CC "Toasted Marshmallow" instead of "Magnolia" - I already had the "TM" so figured I didn't need another white skein of floss.

Here's how the piece stands with this Block...

... as you can see it's coming along nicely, and I am still really happy with the changes I've made.

A Little Calaveras

Gentle Friends, as you know I am a real fan of Converse shoes especially the special edition Chucks.  A few years ago, 2014 to be exact,  I was at the Mall and walking past Journey's - a shoe store - and saw in the Converse display...

... these Sugar Skull (or Calaveras) shoes....  I remember that I had to order them as they were out of my size...  then the next year I got their Fall catalog and once again they had a Special Edition "Sugar Skull" shoe....

 ...  here's 2015 Design...

... 2016 Design, very similar to the year before, but this go round they were more pink and orange....

... and this year the Fall catalogue came really early and once again they had a "Sugar Skull Design.... that I couldn't live without....  and they were so different from the previous year designs...  the tongue of the shoes is really different being a deisgn of all roses and the skull's teeth this year are all sparkly gold... super design and I'm ready for Fall and .... The Day of the Dead!!

A Little Sweet

Gentle friends, you may or may not know that Amazon is a place that you can find damn near anything you want, need or just plain desire....  well, one of my greatest temptations and favorite things are known well to my family and friends is my overwhelming love of black licorice.  Now, I'm talking deep lovely anise flavored licorice and anise flavored things... now I'm talking about some lovely Sambuca... back to licorice... a favorite of type of mine would have to be Pontefract cakes, - a delicious treat from England and in the past when to mood hit me I had to order them from sweet shoppes in the UK.  Well, I got the hankering the other day and started looking around on Amazon at the different black licorices available.... and found a trove of different kinds of licorice from Holland.  From past experience, I knew that the licorice from Holland was simply to die for...  I had tried lots of different variations of Dutch licorice ..... salt, double salt and sweet black licorice.  I really do not care for the salted kind, but the sweet black licorice ...yummy!!

In my search, I ran up against something totally new to me..."Schoolkrijt," "Licorice Chalk " or "Licorice Ice" ..... I was intrigued... after I did a little looking around and reading I figured that there would probably be a 90% or better chance I would love this freaking stuff...so throwing caution to the wind I ordered a bag and....  here's what came...

... for those not knowing what you're actually looking at, "licorice chalk" is a black tubular piece of licorice that is covered with a very thin, crunchy deliciously minty shell.... well, I opened up the bag and out came a dusty, lovely mint odor... I popped one of these suckers in my gaping maw... and was immediately in a swoon!!  Just so you know...these are the bomb and my new very favorite candy!!!

Just a little aside, peppermint is my next very favorite flavor so to combine these two together was right close to my nirvana!!!!  I immediately ordered another bag so that I won't run out of the stuff anytime soon..... so...  if you like black licorice and not many folks do, and you like peppermint then you should give these a try if given the chance.

A Little Stitchin'

Gentle Friends, here's an updated snaparoo of where I am on "Anniversairies" ...

... here's "Swan Lake"... I'm almost finished with this block and will soon be on to August -
or as it is called "Clara Ellen."
_______________

It was a lovely low-key weekend here by the Bay at my house.  Out in the world, specifically downtown SF the annual Pride Parade and Festival were in full swing... which is something we've avoided and not been to in donkey's years.... in fact nobody I know was going and most were steering a clear berth of anything to do with downtown, Civic Center or the Castro.  We heard there were more than a million people attending the various functions..... what we've heard about past years and this year's events, that the majority of the crowds attending are made up of out of town and tourist folks.... here's a snap I lifted from the internet of this year's crowds...

... that's just too many folks for me to deal with... to drink a warm beer and sweat in the sun!!

A Little Thrifting

Gentle Friends, out and about again over the weekend and I found some fun things....

...  I picked up 3 things... the nice aquatint of a mill in the Calvados region of northern France...

... I also picked up this great little hard past porcelain cup, I think it's a punch cup, due to the decoration.  I've been looking at it for almost a month at the Goodwill, but I just couldn't justify the purchase until it hit the half price shelves on Saturday -

... and I found this at a thrift store...It's a reproduction and contains stone removed from the Cathedral during restoration work. This is from Wells Cathedral c. 1240 - from the east aisle of the north transept and represents a sexless Salamander, a reminder to the monks of their vow of celibacy.
